Family Business Australia
4th Generation Winner - Packer Leather
Packer Leather is a fifth generation family business, under the
leadership of owner – Lindsay Packer – Fourth Generation.
Packer Leather is a family company with a proud tradition in the
leather industry since 1891. Currently there are fourth and fifth
generation Packers intimately involved in the management and ongoing
operations of the company. Packer has seen the evolution of tanning
from a purely craft based industry to its current use of modern
technology and scientific methods. As a leather manufacturer and
finisher, Packer purchases skins and hides in raw and semi-processed
states, and uses state of the art technology to make finished leather.
Renowned as Australia’s largest finished Kangaroo leather
producer, the company exports to some 25 countries with key markets
in Indonesia and Hong Kong. With five family members involved in
a business that employs 160 staff, strong employment criteria, remuneration
structures and training systems are in place to ensure that all
staff, both family and non-family are performing the job best suited
to their skills and experience.
The Packer family believes that what is best for the business will
always translate as best for the family. However, the converse is
not always true, but in a broader sense, the family culture must
always be preserved with its ethics and beliefs.
