Konstant

KonstantTM thermoregulating leather incorporates Smart Fabric Technology™ by Outlast, a microencapsulated Phase Change Materials (mPCM's) originally developed for NASA. This perpetual technology is based upon mPCM’s, called “Thermocules®”, that have a range of melting and crystallisation (i.e. freezing) points. By changing the proportion of these Thermocules® different phase change temperatures are possible.

The result of this technology is that they can store energy when the person becomes warm and give that energy back as the person cools down - in essence a thermoregulating buffer effect is in place that benefits the wearer. And because the technology is perpetual it means it never wears out - no matter how many times the Thermocules® undergo a solid to liquid phase change and back again.

People are exposed to ever changing conditions whether in their job or during leisure activities. KonstantTM leather with Smart Fabric Technology™ will improve the comfort to the wearer as they pass through these environmental changes. The transition temperatures can be fine tuned to suit various conditions or locations around the world.

In addition to this the wearer can be active and inactive on an intermittent basis, particularly in some sports. As the activity level increases of the person, so does the amount of heat produced by the body. KonstantTM treated leather with Smart Fabric Technology™ will again improve the comfort of the wearer by creating a thermoregulating buffer situation.

The transition temperatures are set to be suited between the highest and the lowest skin temperatures reached from changes in the heat generated by the body’s metabolism. For example when a person is downhill skiing they may produce five times more body heat than while they were sitting at rest.

However, the skin temperature does not increase in a proportionate amount. Initially, the blood vessels near the skin surface vasolidate, raising the skin temperature slightly and increasing the temperature gradient for heat loss to the environment. However, the physiological response is inadequate during vigorous exercise.

Consequently, the body begins to generate sweat at the skin surface and the process of changing sweat to vapour is in itself an example of phase change, causing a cooling action. By utilising KonstantTM leather with Smart Fabric Technology™ this situation is minimised.

Regarding footwear, the typical foot produces about 4 ounces of sweat each day. This amount can increase by ten-fold during periods of vigorous exercise. Because most footwear has limited breathability, this sweat quickly builds up to create a hot, clammy microclimate. In warm weather this can result in hot spots and blisters.

In cold weather, the moisture build-up in your socks and footwear increases your conductive heat loss, resulting in a cold foot. Footwear featuring KonstantTM reduces overheating and sweat production. This reduces that hot clammy feeling. In cold weather, your feet stay warmer because your socks and insulation stay drier.

In conclusion, KonstantTM leather with Smart Fabric Technology™ is designed to balance temperature. By storing your excess heat as it’s created and releasing it, as it’s needed, you won’t get too hot or too cold and you’ll stay comfortable all day long.
